Unable to Deactivate Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop

Bank feeds help you to link your accounts in QuickBooks Desktop to download the banking transactions easily but sometimes this function doesn’t work due to some technical problem. So users need to Deactivate and Reactive the bank feeds to continue to download their information from the bank and in some cases, users are even unable to deactivate bank feeds in QuickBooks Desktop.

4 Simple Steps to when you’re Unable to Deactivate Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop

Step 1: Update the QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop
  • Go to Help > Upadte QuickBooks Desktop…
  • Click on Update Now
  • Click Get Updates
  • Once the update is completed, click OK and Close
  • Now restart the QuickBooks

Step 2: Resort your lists

Resorting your lists helps your accounts to go in the original order and that can help you to deactivate the bank feeds.

To resort your list using the Banking menu:

  • Go to the Banking tab > Write Checks
  • Click on Pay to the Order of and then press Ctrl+L from the keyboard
  • At the bottom, make a check on Include inactive. If grey out, there are no inactive.
  • Then click on the Name▼ dropdown menu
  • Choose Re-sort List
  • Click OK to take the list to its original order

To resort your list using the Edit menu:

  • Go to the Edit tab > Find
  • Click on the Advanced Tab
  • Choose Name from the Filter
  • Click on the All Names▼ dropdown menu
  • Then press Ctrl+L from your keyboard
  • At the bottom, make a check on Include inactive. If grey out, there are no inactive.
  • Then click on the Name▼ dropdown menu
  • Choose Re-sort List
  • Click OK to take the list to its original order

Step 3: Verify and Rebuild the Data

There are reasons that your data is damaged that may prevent you to deactivate the bank feeds. Verifying and Rebuilding the company file may help you to deactivate the bank feeds properly.

Verify Data

  • Go to File > Utilities
  • Select Verify Data
  • Click OK
  • The process starts to validate the company file, it may take some time depending on the file size
  • Click OK to see the company file status

Rebuild Data

  • Go to File > Utilities
  • Select Rebuild Data
  • Click OK
  • Choose the type of a backup
    > Online Backup
    > Local Backup
  • Click Next
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to back up the company file
  • After creating the backup, it starts rebuilding the company file automatically
  • Once the Rebuild is competed

Try to deactivate the bank feeds, if the same problem still exists, follow the below step.

Step 4: Deactivate the Bank Feeds using Excel

If you still can’t deactivate the bank feeds try to manually edit the file using excel and then import them back to deactivate the bank feeds. Also, if you’re in the multi-user mode, switch it to the single-user mode as Admin.

  • Go to the File menu
  • Select Switch to Single-user Mode

1. Export the Chart of Accounts

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop
  • Go to the File > Utilities
  • Select Export > Lists to IIF Files
  • Select Chart of Accounts and click OK
  • Browse to the desktop to save the file such as Desktop
  • Then enter the file name and click Save
  • Click OK

Now minimize QuickBooks Desktop and follow 2.

2. Edit the IIF file in Excel

  • Press Windows+R keys together to open the Run Command
  • Then type Excel and click OK to open the excel
  • Then open the Blank workbook
  • Go to the File
  • Click on Open > Computer and Browse
  • Choose the location where you saved(such as desktop) the IIF file and click on the drop-down bottom right corner
  • Select All Files
  • Then select your saved IIF file and click Open
  • In the Text Import Wizard, choose Next > Next > Finish
  • Scroll down to the bottom of an excel sheet until you see QB ONLINE
  • Change Y to N for the following:
    > OLBANKINGS
    > OLBILLPAY
    > OLENABLED
    > OLTAB
  • Then go to the File > Save
  • Click on Yes to confirm the changes

3. Import the edited IIF File in QuickBooks Desktop

  • Reopen QuickBooks Desktop
  • Go to File > Utilities > Import
  • Select IIF Files
  • Click OK to close all QuickBooks Windows
  • Click on Import IIF
  • Browse to your IIF File location
  • Select the file and click Open
  • The import process may take some time depending on the file data
  • Once the import process is successful, click on Close
